Seven lose their lives following saboteurs bringing down Russian bridge in front of train

(MENAFN) A bridge in Russia’s Bryansk Region collapsed in front of a passenger train on Sunday, resulting in seven deaths and injuring at least 69 others, according to regional governor Alexander Bogomaz. The exact cause of the collapse is still unclear, but Russian Railways attributed it to “illegal interference with transport operations.”

Izvestia newspaper cited a source suggesting the bridge might have been destroyed by an explosion, though emergency responders and prosecutors have yet to confirm any blast. Several Telegram news channels have indicated sabotage is the likely cause.

Videos shared online show a crushed train carriage with passengers being evacuated through broken windows and emergency teams at the scene. Vehicles on the bridge reportedly fell onto the railway below when the structure gave way.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) confirmed that fire and rescue crews are actively working at the site, providing assistance to victims and deploying additional resources, including emergency equipment and lighting for night operations.

This incident follows another recent attack in the neighboring Belgorod Region, where a freight train hit an explosive device planted under the tracks. While the blast damaged the railway’s contact network, no injuries were reported. Both Bryansk and Belgorod regions border Ukraine and have experienced multiple attacks in recent months.
